Soldiers from Australia and New Zealand fought alongside Cretan civilians to defend against the invading German army.⠀ ___⠀ ⠀ The victory for the Germans in this pivotal battle was shallow because it delayed their surge eastward, only reaching the Russian border at the onset of winter. And the winter is what defeated them.
