The French architect seemed to overlook one important feature - access to the elevated choir loft. After the architect suddenly died a mysterious carpenter arrived in town and offered to build a staircase. Using non-native wood, crude tools and warm water he built a helix-shaped staircase with no nails, no glue and no centre support - defying all engineering logic.
